Living Quarters

Moved to Scout's Lodge
The scientific drilling team on Heimaey moved from the Scout’s House to the Scout’s lodge two days ago. Though further out, the Scout’s lodge is better fitted for a smaller group and boasts a view straight out to the sea (and Surtsey!). Surtsey can be seen in the far distance, between the two islands closer to Heimaey. Many thanks to the people on Heimaey for letting us live in their Scout’s House through August and the beginning of September, when we were a larger group.

Fixing the Dishwasher
An electrical engineer who is waiting to go to Surtsey helped out immensely by fixing the dishwasher in the kitchen. He also was invaluable in fixing the MSCL machine, which was also functioning improperly.
He also optimized our DMT Scanner and helped with setting up the rock saw…Sure is good to have an engineer around.

Creating Sleeping Space
We only have so many private rooms in Heimaey. Thankfully, we have lots of mattresses. This is a mock bedroom created by piling many mattresses together to form a wall. This is in the main room of the Scout’s House (where we eat). Bunks being moved around to optimize privacy for sleeping.
See more at the link above.

First Food on Heimaey
The core-logging team works together to create an Icelandic hot-dog, complete with breaded and fried onions. This is the first meal prepared in the Scout’s House.

Drying Clothes
The heaters in the main room of the Scout’s House are great for drying clothes!
